PowerCell to Supply Fuel Cells for Two More Hydrogen-Electric Bulkers
Sweden-based hydrogen-electric solutions firm PowerCell Group will supply fuel cell systems for two more hydrogen-electric bulk carriers being developed by GMI Group AS.
The follow-up order, worth SEK 27 million, covers 10 Marine System 225 fuel cell system units and engineering services, the firm said in an emailed update on Monday.
Deliveries are scheduled for 2027-2028.
The order follows an initial deal in September 2025 for two vessels, taking the total number of ships in the project to four.
PowerCell will supply 24 fuel cell units with a combined installed capacity of 5.4 MW across the four vessels.
The two additional bulkers will each have a deadweight capacity of 3,000 tonnes and will be built by India-based Chowgule Shipyard.
Each vessel will be fitted with five fuel cell units.
The ships will use compressed renewable hydrogen to generate electricity onboard through fuel cells.
The first two vessels, each measuring 85 m and with a deadweight capacity of 4,000 tonnes, are planned for launch in 2027.
They are expected to become the world's first hydrogen-electric bulk carriers.
