German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has agreed to buy a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam.

APM Terminals will keep operational control of the terminal, Hapag-Lloyd said in a press release on Wednesday.

The deal will support the terminal’s ongoing expansion, which includes 1,000 m of additional deep-sea berth, more yard space and four extra rail tracks.

Once completed, the expansion is expected to lift the terminal’s annual handling capacity to 5.4 million TEU.

Maasvlakte II is an important European hub for the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and A.P. Moller-Maersk.

Hapag-Lloyd said the investment would also secure long-term terminal capacity in Rotterdam.

“The terminal is a key element for the Gemini Cooperation and fits well with our strategy to build a stronger terminal portfolio in core markets," Dheeraj Bhatia, CTIO of Hapag-Lloyd AG and CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals, said.

Financial details were not disclosed. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval.
