Balearia Begins Sea Trials of LNG Dual-Fuel Fast Ferry
Spanish shipping company Balearia has started sea trials for its new dual-fuel fast ferry Mercedes Pinto in Gijón, as the vessel nears completion at the Armon Shipyard.
The catamaran is the company’s third LNG dual-fuel vessel and is expected to be delivered in May, it said in an email statement on Wednesday.
Balearia plans to deploy the ferry on Canary Islands routes once its acquisition of Armas Trasmediterranea’s local assets is finalised.
Sea trials will run over several days and include testing of manoeuvrability, speed, stability and engine performance, along with verification of navigation, safety and auxiliary systems using both fuels.
The vessel can carry 1,200 passengers and 425 vehicles and will offer features similar to Balearia’s Eleanor Roosevelt and Margarita Salas.
Balearia said the vessel aligns with its strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, supported by LNG use, bio-LNG adoption, electrification and operational efficiency measures.
In February, the company said more than half of its fleet's installed propulsion power can run on LNG or bio-LNG.
