Bunker Supplier Restarts Malta Operations After Suspension
A Greek bunker supplier has resumed operations in Malta after the suspension of its local agent's license in February over a bribery scandal, the newspaper Malta Today reports.
The license of Fuelserve Ltd, the local agent for Greece's Macoil International (Macoil), was suspended after director Frank Sammut was charged with bribery for receiving kickbacks from the commodities trader Trafigura.
Macoil has resumed operations under its own name, increasing supply levels in a market that had been tight since Fuelserve's suspension.
The charges against Sammut related to his work as chief executive of Mediterranean Oil Bunkering Corp., the bunkering arm of energy company Enemalta.
The bribery charges were part of a larger scandal over Enemalta's fuel procurement activities, which also involved the extension of a contract with local bunkering company Island Bunker Oils for 26 months without any call for tenders.
Aside from Macoil, other bunkering companies whose licenses were suspended over the scandal have not yet returned to Malta.
