Eidesvik Begins Ammonia Propulsion Conversion of LNG-Fuelled Ship
Norwegian offshore shipping firm Eidesvik Offshore has started retrofit work to convert its LNG-fuelled platform supply vessel Viking Energy to ammonia propulsion.
The vessel has entered dock at Halsnoy Dokk to begin installation of a dual-fuel ammonia engine supplied by marine technology firm Wartsila Marine, Eidesvik said in a LinkedIn update on Monday.
Delivered in 2003, the vessel features four dual-fuel LNG engines from Wartsila.
While a growing number of ships are being ordered with 'ammonia-ready' designs for possible future conversion, the Viking Energy project is among the first to move into actual retrofit work for ammonia operations.
Upon completion, Viking Energy is expected to become one of the first offshore vessels capable of operating on ammonia marine fuel in normal operations.
The project is being carried out in cooperation with the Norwegian energy company Equinor and aims to advance lower-emission offshore operations.
