A consortium led by Stillstrom by Maersk has secured €5 million in EU Horizon Europe funding to develop and test offshore charging infrastructure for vessels at anchor off Skagen, Denmark.

The three-year Project SPARK initiative aims to reduce emissions from ships running auxiliary engines while waiting offshore between operations, Stillstrom said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

The pilot offshore power zone will allow vessels to connect to an at-sea power point supplied with electricity from the nearby Port of Skagen.

Initially, the project will support a single vessel connection to validate the concept in a live operating environment.

Unlike conventional shore power systems that require vessels to berth alongside a quay, the offshore setup is designed for ships anchored outside ports.

Project partners include DNV, Maersk and the Port of Skagen.

Project SPARK is due to begin in June and run for 36 months.
