Market Disruption has Changed Bunker Trader Recruitment Needs

Before the recent market upheaval, recruitment in our sector was expected to be subdued this year.

At the start of 2026 the market was cautious, with companies very much focused on efficiency and consolidation rather than expansion, and their hiring needs reflected that.

The outbreak of war in the Middle East has changed this dynamic.

Price volatility, demand shift from supply rerouting, and regulatory escalation are are making expertise in hedging, alternative sourcing, risk assessment, and compliance increasingly valuable.

The modern bunker trader must navigate not just physical deals, but sanctions, KYC, and volatile paper markets — all essential to avoid losses, but particularly in today’s market where risk visibility is increasingly limited.

Recruitment needs have changed as a result.

For example, as a direct result of buyers pivoting to lift bunkers in alternative hubs, I currently have clients actively seeking experienced senior bunker traders across the Far East, Europe, and Houston.

But the spectre of instability and prolonged conflict remains a concern, and many traders I’ve spoken to are relieved to have found a home with financially robust, well-run trading houses.

For companies looking to make a new hire, this of course means that demand is up, the pool of available talent is down, and salaries have adjusted accordingly.

And my pre-crisis guidance on avoiding “wrong” hires has become even more critical, as malpractice risks multiply in chaotic conditions.

Overall, recent events in the Middle East have transformed the market and recruitment is no exception.

Hiring has shifted from routine roles to urgent, specialised needs. Demand for experienced professionals has risen sharply in stable hubs, with commercial focus moving from volume to resilience.

In difficult markets, firms securing top talent are best placed to weather the storm. Opportunity does exist for those who can trade through chaos - but only with the right people on board.
