AYK Energy has won a contract to supply marine battery systems for nine new RoPax vessels being built for the Grimaldi Group.

The company will provide its 2,073 kWh OrionAN battery system for each vessel, bringing the fleet's combined battery capacity to 18,657 kWh, the firm said in a press release on Monday.

The ships are being built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) and are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030.

Six vessels will operate in the Mediterranean under the Grimaldi Lines and Minoan Lines brands, while the remaining three will sail in the Baltic Sea for Finnlines.

The new RoPax vessels will be designed for future conversion to methanol propulsion and will feature shore power connectivity, along with other energy-efficiency technologies aimed at reducing emissions.

AYK said its OrionAN battery systems, which received type approval from DNV last year, will help improve the vessels' energy efficiency and environmental performance.
