Japanese classification society ClassNK has revised its guidelines for ships using alternative fuels, updating safety requirements for vessels powered by hydrogen, methanol and ethanol.

The revision is designed to help shipyards, designers and owners develop and assess alternative-fuelled ships in line with international standards, it said in an emailed update on Tuesday.

For hydrogen-fuelled ships, the updated guidelines incorporate the IMO’s interim guidelines, MSC.1/Circ.1701, and add hydrogen leak-frequency estimates for safety assessments.

For methanol- and ethanol-fuelled ships, ClassNK has introduced new structural strength requirements for fuel tanks.

“As a third-party certification body, ClassNK will continue to support your efforts to address environmental challenges through the development of standards, certification, and the provision of information,” it said.

The revised guidelines are available from ClassNK’s website following registration.
