Emissions management software developer ZERO44 has launched a free online calculator to show shipowners how switching to biofuels affects costs under carbon regulations.
The tool compares fuel prices with carbon costs and potential benefits under EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime, the firm said in an emailed update on Wednesday.
Using default assumptions, replacing one tonne of VLSFO with biodiesel on EU voyages could deliver a net benefit of around €163 in 2026, ZERO44 said.
“Too often, the conversation about alternative fuels stops at the price per tonne,” Friederike Hesse, Managing Director at ZERO44, said.
“But that doesn’t tell the whole story.”
“Once you factor in regulatory costs and the value of over-compliance, the premium can turn into a net benefit.”
“We built this calculator to make those mechanics visible.”
The calculator also shows how rising carbon prices and tighter emissions targets could affect fuel costs in the coming years.
The calculator can be found here.
