Everllence Unit Behind First Hapag-Lloyd-Seaspan Methanol Boxship Conversion
Engine maker Everllence’s after-sales division PrimeServ has disclosed its role in the methanol dual-fuel conversion of Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan Corporation's container ship.
The Seaspan Yangtze is the first vessel in a five-ship Hapag-Lloyd retrofit programme to be converted for methanol dual-fuel operation, Everllence said in an email update on Tuesday.
The 10,100 TEU vessel, owned by Seaspan and chartered to Hapag-Lloyd, was delivered earlier this month.
PrimeServ completed the upgrade of the vessel's main engine at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai). The ship has since returned to service.
"The Seaspan Yangtze retrofit shows that upgrading existing vessels to methanol dual-fuel operation is no longer a concept, but a proven and repeatable engineering solution," Dr.-Ing. Christoph Thiem, Director Fleet Innovation & Project at Hapag-Lloyd, said.
According to Everllence, the project marks the 30th dual-fuel retrofit completed by PrimeServ across LNG, methanol and LPG platforms.
Following the conversion, Seaspan said the vessel's Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) is around 55% below the international minimum standard.
