Technology firm Core Power has launched a feasibility study to assess the potential integration of BWX Technologies' small modular nuclear reactor technology into floating nuclear power plants built and deployed from shipyards.

The study will examine the technical, regulatory and commercial requirements for using BWXT's mPower reactor design in Core Power's floating power plant concept, the firm said in a press release published on its website on Thursday.

The reactor was originally developed as a generation III+ small modular reactor with a capacity of 195 MW of electricity per unit.

Floating nuclear power plants are designed to be constructed in shipyards and deployed near areas of high-power demand.

Core Power said the approach could help reduce construction risks and provide reliable electricity to regions facing grid constraints, land shortages or lengthy infrastructure development timelines.

The assessment will include systems engineering, marine integration, concept development, regulatory pathway reviews and techno-economic analysis.

The company has previously said floating nuclear power plants could provide power solutions for ports.

The study, funded by Core Power, is expected to help determine future engineering work, regulatory engagement and commercial opportunities for the company's floating nuclear power plant programme.

The experience gained could also support broader efforts to bring nuclear technology to commercial shipping.
