LR Approves First 100% Hydrogen-Fuelled Marine Engine
Lloyd's Register (LR) has issued the first type approval certificate for a 100% hydrogen-fuelled marine engine developed by BeHydro.
The approval confirms the engine meets LR's requirements for safety, performance and reliability in marine applications, it said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
Developed and tested at ABC Engines' facility in Ghent, the engine runs entirely on hydrogen, eliminating the need for pilot fuels for ignition.
BeHydro said the engine range is available from 900 kW to 2,670 kW for a variety of marine applications.
The approval follows LR's 2023 certification of BeHydro's hydrogen dual-fuel engine, which was the first type approval granted for a dual-fuel hydrogen engine.
LR said the certification highlights the growing maturity of hydrogen internal combustion engine technology for maritime use.
