Maritime transportation firm SFL Corporation has ordered two 93,000 m3 very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) in a deal that will add at least $162 million to its fixed-rate charter backlog.

The vessels are due for delivery from the second quarter of 2028, with the combined construction cost expected to be about $216 million, the company said in a press release on Monday.

The ships will be capable of carrying a range of petrochemical gases and will feature dual-fuel propulsion, along with technology aimed at improving fuel efficiency and cargo intake.

SFL did not specify which fuels the dual-fuel propulsion systems will be capable of using.

SFL has agreed long-term time charters for the vessels with a European-based investment-grade oil major. The initial charter period will be determined within the next six months, which could increase the charter backlog.

The charterer will also have options to extend the contracts by up to four years.

Including acquisitions and charter extensions announced so far this year, SFL has added more than $1.3 billion to its fixed-rate charter backlog in 2026.
