The IMO’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC) finalised revised interim guidelines last week for ships using methanol and other methyl/ethyl alcohol fuels.

The CCS 12 session was held from 14-18 September, DNV said in a summary released on its website on Monday.

The revised guidelines cover all sections of the existing framework and reflect experience gained from ships using these fuels.

The changes provide greater flexibility in fuel tank placement and leakage-handling arrangements, while introducing a new approach to ventilation of fuel spaces.

The guidelines also expand provisions covering bunkering station design and fire-extinguishing arrangements and add guidance on bunkering operations and personal protective equipment.

The sub-committee also finalised a harmonised performance standard for lashing software to supplement the cargo securing manual.

The revised methanol fuel guidelines remain subject to further consideration and approval by the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee.
