Japanese shipping company MOL has named the world’s first LNG carrier equipped with wind-assisted propulsion, with the vessel set to enter a long-term charter with Chevron later this month.

The vessel, Fujin Sailor, was named on Thursday at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje shipyard in South Korea and is scheduled for delivery at the end of September.

The LNG carrier is fitted with two Wind Challenger hard-sail units, making it the first vessel of any type to feature two such systems.

The technology is designed to reduce bunker fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional propulsion.

The ship is the fourth of 11 MOL Group vessels planned or equipped with Wind Challenger wind propulsion systems.

MOL aims to have 25 Wind Challenger-equipped vessels in operation by 2030 and 80 by 2035 as part of its strategy to reach net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
