HHI Complete LNG, Diesel Dual-Fuel Engine Demonstration
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) says it has successfully carried out its first ever full-scale demonstration test of its LNG Fuel Gas Supply (FGSS) and Hyundai Integrated Gas Supply Systems (Hi-GAS) in an ME-GI marine engine, which allows it to use both diesel and LNG.
HHI said the system, intended for use in all types of vessels including liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, containerships, and oil tankers, and shows higher levels of performance while allowing ship owners and operators to reduce emissions to comply with regulations.
"There are numerous inquiries regarding the FGSS," said Lee Tae-young, vice president of HHI's Engine and Machinery Division.
"This FGSS will give us marketing leverage for new shipbuilding order as IMO (International Maritime Organisation) regulations begin in earnest."
Industry observers expect LNG to gain traction as a marine fuel with new demands for reduction in sulfur emissions within emissions control areas (ECAs) beginning in 2015.
MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN) recently announced that it had won a contract to equip two vessels with dual-fuel engines that can burn diesel or LNG.
