LR and Korean Firms to Advance Nuclear-Assisted Car Carrier Concept
Lloyd's Register (LR) and a group of South Korean maritime and nuclear organisations are advancing a joint project exploring the use of nuclear-assisted propulsion on a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC).
The partners are studying how a molten salt reactor (MSR)-based small modular reactor (SMR) could be integrated into a large vehicle carrier, LR said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
The work has examined reactor placement, shielding requirements, vessel stability, cargo capacity and propulsion system design.
Safety has been a key focus, with LR leading hazard identification and preliminary risk assessment work covering containment systems, onboard safety measures and operational considerations linked to nuclear technology.
"While nuclear propulsion is still at an early stage of development, this project shows the importance of building technical understanding now to support future progress," Sung-Gu Park, President – North East Asia at LR, said.
The project brings together LR, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), Hyundai Glovis, G-Marine Service and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).
The project was marked by an approval in principle (AiP) ceremony at Posidonia 2026 in Athens on Tuesday.
