Marine technology firm Wartsila will supply propulsion systems for nine new ferry vessels being built for the Grimaldi Group.

The newbuilds include four vessels for Grimaldi Lines, three for Finnlines and two for Minoan Lines, the firm said in an emailed update on Tuesday.

All are under construction at China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Weihai shipyard.

Each vessel will be equipped with Wartsila’s fuel-flexible engines, capable of conversion to operate on fuels such as methanol, along with hybrid exhaust scrubbers and transverse thrusters.

The three Finnlines ferries will also receive Wartsila’s hybrid-electric propulsion system, as well as gearboxes, controllable pitch propellers, shaft lines and the remote propulsion control system to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

Wartsila said the integrated propulsion package is designed to help shipowners meet tightening emissions regulations while maintaining operational flexibility.

Equipment deliveries are scheduled between 2026 and 2028.
