There are now 100 bunkering vessels equipped with a Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) approved Mass Flow Metering (MFM) system, according to the MPA's latest records.

The 1,274 gt Feresa, and 3,701 gt Double Happiness were the most recent vessels to gain accreditation, which were both awarded on August 1.

With a current total of 223 licenced bunker barges in Singapore, it means around 45 percent are now accredited with an MPA approved MFM system for bunkering.

This is an increase from May where one-third (76 of the at the time total of 226) had approved MFM systems.

However, as not all vessels are expected to get MPA approved MFMs, in means about 75 percent of those projected to be fitted with MFMs have now done so.

Using an MFM for MFO bunkering will be mandatory in Singapore from January 1, 2017.

"I think by 1st Jan 2017 we will have around 120 to 130 MPA approved MFM barges," Simon Neo, Executive Director, Piroj International, told Ship & Bunker earlier this year.
