Japanese Ammonia-Fuelled Engine to Power Ship Launching in November
Japanese engine maker Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has said a gas carrier equipped with its ammonia-fuelled engine is scheduled to launch in November 2026.
The testing of the engine was completed in August 2025, the company said in an email update on Monday.
J-ENG announced the update ahead of its participation at the Posidonia 2026 maritime exhibition in Athens, Greece, from June 1-5.
The company also said it started all-cylinder hydrogen co-firing operations in March 2026 using its hydrogen-fuelled engine.
In addition, J-ENG said it is developing new ammonia- and methanol-fuelled engine models to expand its alternative-fuel engine lineup.
In March 2025, J-ENG renewed its license agreement with Japanese engine manufacturer Akasaka Diesels, expanding cooperation on ammonia-fuelled engines.
