Ultramax Bulk Carrier Fitted with OceanWings Wind Propulsion System
An ultramax bulk carrier has returned to service after being fitted with OceanWings’ rigid wingsail wind propulsion system at Tsuneishi Shipbuilding in Japan.
The retrofit was carried out on Maria Topic by Topic, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding and OceanWings, the shipbuilder said in a press release on Tuesday.
The companies said the project shows how wind-assisted propulsion can be added to existing commercial ships.
Tsuneishi Shipbuilding said the project drew on its ship repair and retrofit experience, while OceanWings said it demonstrated its ability to manufacture and install the system for commercial vessels.
OceanWings and Topic plan to share initial operational data from Maria Topic at SMM Hamburg in September.
The retrofit was supported by the EU-funded WHISPER project, which is working on retrofit solutions combining wind-assisted propulsion with renewable onboard energy systems.
