Ammonia Bunkering Trial Planned for Converted LNG-Fuelled Vessel
The platform supply vessel Viking Energy, converted from LNG to ammonia propulsion, has moved closer to its first ammonia bunkering test in Norway.
Azane Fuel Solutions has received approval from the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection to carry out a test bunkering of up to 73 mt of ammonia, the Apollo project said on Wednesday.
The operation is planned for October or November at Stord, Norway.
Ammonia will be transferred from up to three trucks to test the bunkering arrangements and safety systems being installed on the vessel.
Owned by Norwegian offshore shipping firm Eidesvik Offshore, Viking Energy is being converted under the Apollo project, which aims to demonstrate ammonia-fuelled propulsion in offshore operations.
An ammonia engine and storage tank were delivered to Halsnøy Dock earlier this year.
Azane has also agreed to supply ammonia and provide truck-to-ship bunkering services under an agreement with Norwegian energy company Equinor, with the first deliveries scheduled for late 2026.
