UK’s Portsmouth International Port has completed its first commercial shore power connection for a cruise ship.

Virgin Voyages’ cruise ship Valiant Lady plugged into the port’s shore power system, the port said in a LinkedIn post on Wednesday.

The port also said it would achieve another first with two vessels connected to shore power simultaneously, as Brittany Ferries’ ship Guillaume de Normandie was due to use the system alongside Valiant Lady.

Shore power allows ships to switch off their auxiliary engines while berthed and draw electricity from the local grid, cutting emissions and improving air quality around ports.

Portsmouth described the dual connection as a significant milestone for the UK maritime sector and a step towards using the system at its full capacity.

The shore power project has received funding from the UK Department for Transport and Innovate UK.

The port had commissioned the multi-berth shore power system last month.
