Russia Developing Bunkering, Port Infrastructure For NSR
Planned development of port infrastructure in Far-Eastern Russia's Avachinskaya Bay will include bunkering services for ships travelling the Northern Sea Route (NSR), PortNews reports.
The plans also include ship repair and cargo transshipment, with the area to be declared a Priority Development Area.
The hope is that the designation and the new infrastructure will boost port business development in the region of Kamchatka.
"It is necessary to analyze the situation, estimate the peninsula's potential in terms of industry, transport infrastructure and ship repair opportunities so that vessels bound for Northern Sea Route could be serviced in Kamchatka," said Dmitry Rogozin, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.
Late last year, it was reported that applications to travel through the NSR had reached a record of 600 in 2014.
