France-based marine fuel cell developer Genevos has joined a €7 million EU-backed project to develop a scalable hydrogen fuel cell system for maritime use.

The MARINER initiative is coordinated by NORCE Research and funded under Horizon Europe via the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, Genevos said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

It aims to design and validate a modular 1 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system capable of delivering power to larger ships.

Genevos’ role, supported by €2.2 million in funding, will focus on engineering and delivering the marine fuel cell system.

The project will test a containerised 1 MW system under real maritime conditions for more than 1,000 hours, alongside accelerated testing of a 200 kW module to assess durability.

Additional work includes digital monitoring tools, safety procedures and lifecycle analysis, aimed at supporting future commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered shipping.

While fuel cell systems have been demonstrated on smaller vessels such as tugs, they have yet to see commercial-scale deployment on large ships.
