ABS has launched a new software product designed to help owners and operators address environmental issues, including energy efficiency, emission controls, and ballast water management.

"One of the biggest challenges facing the marine and offshore industries is how to successfully meet changing environmental regulatory requirements," said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.

"ABS is systematically combining traditional class services with innovative products and services to support compliance efforts and improve vessel performance."

ABS said the new Energy & Environmental Manager module, which functions as part of its NS5 Enterprise software suite, tracks and records key data from voyages, including fuel and lube oil consumption, fuel oil switching, cargo information, and ballast activities.

The resulting reports can help ship owners meet various regulatory requirements while also finding ways to reduce their fuel costs.

ABS said it also offers a Trim Optimization tool, which helps determine the best ballast configuration for minimum hull resistance.

ABS provides a variety of services related to improving ships' environmental and energy efficiency performance.

Earlier this year, Asea Brown Boveri Ltd said software solutions are becoming increasingly important for managing energy costs and emissions as it acquired of Dutch maritime software solutions company Amarcon BV.
