Japanese shipping company NYK has signed an agreement to buy carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from US carbon-removal company Graphyte.

The credits will come from Graphyte's Loblolly project in Arkansas, US, which uses waste biomass from agriculture, forestry and wood processing, NYK said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

The material is processed and stored underground to prevent the release of CO2 into the atmosphere.

“CDR credits generated by this project are certified through a rigorous system of measurement, reporting, and verification conducted by independent third parties, ensuring a high level of transparency and reliability,” NYK said.

The credits could help offset emissions from shipping operations that are difficult to eliminate as it works towards its net-zero emissions target.

The company is also pursuing other decarbonisation measures, including energy-efficiency improvements and the use of alternative marine fuels such as LNG, ammonia and methanol.

Graphyte generates carbon removal credits through a process that converts biomass into a stable form for long-term underground storage.
