An explosion has been reported on a ship off the coast of Iraq.

The cargo ship was hit by a projectile about 40 nautical miles south-east of Umm Qasr at 1 PM UTC on Monday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said in a social media post.

"A cargo vessel was transiting the Arabian Gulf when a large explosion followed a hit from an unknown projectile on the starboard side," the agency said.

"UKMTO is unaware of any environmental impact at this time."

Deliberate attacks on commercial shipping in the region have reduced in frequency significantly, albeit not completely disappeared, compared to the period at the start of the recent conflict in early March.

It should be noted that parts of the area are reported to have had mines laid in them, meaning some incidents of this kind may emerge accidentally.
