Energy and infrastructure conglomerate Sahara Group has commenced bunkering operations in Mauritania, West Africa, following the award of a 2026 bunkering licence by the Mauritanian government.

The firm has chartered a 7,600 DWT bunker tanker, FT Nervi, positioned offshore Nouadhibou, to supply MGO and VLSFO to vessels operating in Mauritanian waters, the firm said in a press release on Friday.

Sahara said the move supports efforts to strengthen Mauritania’s role as a maritime and trade hub along the West African coast.

Earlier this month, global bunker suppliers Minerva and Peninsula announced the launch of physical bunker supply operations in Mauritania after securing licences from the authorities.

“This development is significant for Mauritania and for Africa’s maritime economy,” Wale Ajibade, Executive Director at Sahara Group, said.

“By establishing operational bunkering capacity in Mauritania, we are supporting port competitiveness, improving vessel turnaround efficiency, and strengthening the infrastructure that enables regional and international trade,” he added.

The company said the operation will help improve access to compliant marine fuels for vessels trading across West and North-West Africa while supporting compliance with IMO sulfur regulations through the supply of VLSFO.
