RINA Approves GT Wings Tool for Evaluating Wind Propulsion Savings
Wind propulsion company GT Wings has received approval from classification society RINA for a performance assessment tool used to evaluate its AirWing wind propulsion system.
Developed with maritime performance modelling firm Blue Wasp Marine, the tool estimates potential bunker fuel, emissions and regulatory savings for different vessels and routes, GT Wings said in a statement on its website on Thursday.
GT Wings added that the tool will help shipowners assess the potential benefits of AirWing technology at an early stage and support technical and commercial decision-making.
RINA reviewed and verified the modelling methodology and assessment framework, confirming they align with recognised industry standards and guidelines.
The company said its AirWing system is already installed on Carisbrooke Shipping's MV Vectis Progress ship and that it has completed more than 80 early-stage performance assessments.
The firm had claimed its wind propulsion systems can reduce bunker consumption by up to 30%.

Additional orders have also been secured from Grieg Maritime Group.
GT Wings said the tool provides a more consistent and transparent way to evaluate the potential savings from wind-assisted propulsion projects.
