Dual-Fuel Container Ship and Vehicle Carrier Fleet Surpasses 500: WSC
More than 500 dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers are now in operation worldwide, with investment in vessels delivered and on order exceeding $200 billion, according to the World Shipping Council (WSC).
The WSC's latest dashboard shows 503 ships in operation as of September 2026, up 41% from 358 a year earlier, it said in an emailed update on Thursday.
Another 849 dual-fuel ships are on order.
Alternative-fuel-capable ships account for 65% of container ship orders and 97% of vehicle carrier orders by deadweight tonnage, compared with 23% across the wider global fleet.
However, orders for conventional-fuelled ships have also increased over the past year amid uncertainty over greenhouse gas regulations at the IMO.
“Ships ordered today will be operating for decades,” Joe Kramek, WSC president and chief executive, said.
“Shipping companies and fuel producers need certainty to make the investments that will shape the future fleet and its fuel supply.”
