April saw a notable pickup in alternative-fuelled vessel contracting, with 38 new orders recorded after a subdued start to 2026, when just five were recorded in March, according to AFI platform numbers from classification society DNV.
LNG again dominated the newbuild orders, accounting for 20 of the orders, Kristian Hammer, product manager for AFI and senior consultant at DNV, said in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.
These included eight car carriers, six container ships, four crude tankers and two cruise vessels.
The LPG and ethane carrier segment also showed strength, with 14 newbuild orders placed during the month.
A smaller but notable development was the addition of four ammonia-fuelled bulk carrier orders.
Cumulatively, AFI data indicate 83 alternative-fuel vessel orders were placed between January and April 2026, suggesting a gradual recovery in momentum as the year progresses.
