March Alternative-Fuelled Newbuild Orders Shrink to Five: DNV
March saw five new orders for alternative-fuelled vessels – a decline for the third consecutive month, according to AFI platform numbers from classification society DNV.
The total included two LNG-fuelled car carriers, two LPG carriers and one methanol-fuelled platform supply vessel (PSV), Kristian Hammer, product manager for AFI and senior consultant at DNV, said in a LinkedIn post on Wednesday.
The figure represents a sharp drop from 25 alternative-capable vessels ordered in the same month last year, and down from 17 orders recorded in February.
Hammer said 45 alternative-capable ships were ordered in the first quarter of 2026, compared to 73 in the same period last year.
“Looking at the market from another angle, the AFI platform also shows strong delivery activity in Q1, with 60 alternative-fuelled vessels delivered in the first three months of the year, he said.
“This includes 27 LNG-fuelled and 17 methanol-fuelled vessels, reflecting the robust order pipeline built up in these segments over the past three to four years.”
