Harris Pye Engineering Group (Harris Pye) says it has seen a "marked increase" in interest for turnkey exhaust gas scrubber installations within the shipping industry in response to stricter environmental regulations, including emission control areas (ECAs) and an impending 0.5 percent global sulfur cap on bunkers.

"Not surprisingly, we are seeing a marked increase in interest in complete turnkey installation packages for exhaust gas scrubber systems; from initial site surveys, feasibility studies, 3D laser scanning/modelling ultimately progressing to detailed engineering and design, leading to a cost effective installation programme," said Chris David, Harris Pye's Chief Technical Officer.

Harris Pye, which says it is currently conducting installations for major cruise line operators, notes that it has workshops throughout the UK, Middle East, Asia, and Brazil, enabling the company to provide its clients with an "efficient and economical" alternative to custom fabrication.

"Vessel owners are able to benefit from local and globally discounted supply chain costs and reduced installation times," added David.

In June, Ship & Bunker reported that the Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) said that the marine scrubber industry has "ample scrubber capacity for 2020" and is ready to help shipping comply with the 0.50 percent global sulfur cap for bunkers that is expected to come into force that year.
