MOL Launches Joint Study on LNG-Fuelled Bulker with Five Other Companies

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) today announced that it will work with BHP Billiton, DNV GL, Rio Tinto, Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) and Woodside Energy on a joint study of the examine the technological and economic feasibility of a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled Capesize bulker.

Called "Green Corridor," the joint research project is intended to reduce merchant vessels' NOX and SOX emissions in anticipation of tighter global emissions standards.

The companies signed a letter of agreement to embark on the joint study project at a ceremony in Singapore on January 20.

"The MOL Group continually takes a proactive approach to developing and adopting technologies that contribute to reducing environmental impact and enhancing safe operation, while providing safe and reliable transport services," said MOL said of its participation in the project.

In November, MOL announced that it had launched a new technological development project aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its fleet, the Ishin Next - MOL Smart Ship Project.
