Repeat Order for Wärtsilä Emissions Reduction System
Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) says it has received a repeat order for a hybrid exhaust gas cleaning and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system.
Wärtsilä say that, under rules that allow equivalence methods for reducing emissions, the systems should allow ships to comply with sulfur limits as strict as the 0.1 percent level that will go into effect in North American and European Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) in 2015, as well as with Tier III nitrogen oxide (NOx) limits that the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will put in place in 2016.
The exhaust gas cleaning, or scrubber, system allows operators to choose between open-loop scrubbing, or closed-loop when water is re-circulated within the system.
"This repeat order, included in the 2012 fourth quarter order book for Wärtsilä, further validates scrubbing technology as a proven, efficient and cost effective method of meeting and exceeding ECA compliance and is evidence of the strong customer partnerships that we develop and the quality of the systems that we provide," said Sigurd Jenssen, director of Exhaust Gas Cleaning for Wärtsilä Ship Power, Environmental Solutions.
"Wärtsilä customers are at the forefront of proactive preparation for further incoming environmental regulation and are taking their responsibilities seriously."
As the shipping industry prepares for new emission rules to take effect, some experts say exhaust cleaning systems will become more popular, while others predict the technology will be overtaken by the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers, which produce fewer emissions than standard fuel oil.
