New "ECA Aware" Voyage Calculator Product from AWT
U.S.-based software maker Applied Weather Technology Inc. (AWT) says it has launched a new program called Voyage Calculator that determines distance, speed loss, and cost of voyages between ports, accounting for weather, ocean currents, hire rates, and other factors.
"Relying on great circle distances can produce unrealistic results," the company said.
"Voyage Calculator's more reliable information is based on AWT's experience of routing thousands of vessels per month as well as more than a decade of weather data analysis."
The company claims the improvement in accuracy can provide savings for ship operators.
"In addition to the weather and ocean current information that yields expected speed loss via AWT's proprietary Climatological Ship Resistance (CSR) model, Voyage Calculator can account for different fuels and rates of consumption," the company said.
"It can also factor in emission control area (ECA) zones and piracy considerations as it sets a route."
Voyage Calculator is a web-based product that allows users to set voyage parameters and view results through an online map.
In an analysis published by Ship & Bunker last month, Fathom discussed the potential improvements to ship efficiency brought about by the use of more sophisticated software to analyse available data.
