Adria Ferries has reported a 2-3% reduction in bunker fuel consumption after applying Propspeed foul-release coating to the propeller blades of one of its passenger ferries.

The coating was applied to passenger ship AF MIA in March 2026, Propspeed said in an emailed update on Tuesday.

According to an internal analysis by Adria Ferries, the vessel subsequently consumed around 0.6-0.7 mt less fuel per crossing on average.

The operator estimated that the fuel saving reached approximately 56 mt during the first three months following the application.

AF MIA operates on Adria Ferries’ Ancona-Durrës route between Italy and Albania, carrying up to 1,528 passengers and 819 vehicles.

The vessel joined the company’s fleet in December 2023.

The ferry has operated on B20 biofuel since December 2025.

To provide a consistent comparison, Adria Ferries assessed crossings on the same route using B20 before and after the Propspeed application.

“I believe an average benefit in fuel consumption of 2-3% can reasonably be attributed to Propspeed,” Commander Salvatore Della Rocca, Fleet Manager and Chief Operating Officer at Adria Ferries, said.

CMP Europe, the sole Italian distributor of Propspeed, supported the application and continues to work with Adria Ferries on its fleet requirements.

Adria Ferries operates routes connecting Italy with Albania and Montenegro under the Frittelli Maritime Group.
