The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has launched a calculator to help shipowners assess the potential benefits of onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS).

The tool was unveiled during GCMD’s fifth anniversary celebrations and builds on findings from Project CAPTURED, it said in an emailed update on Monday.

It allows users to estimate how much CO2 can be captured, stored and offloaded from ships, and how much can ultimately be mineralised after downstream processing.

The calculator also examines how these volumes could affect shipowners’ EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) compliance costs, including the number of EU Allowances (EUAs) they may need to surrender.

Users can adjust variables such as capture rates, onboard storage capacity and operating duration to see how they affect the amount of CO2 retained.

The tool also accounts for losses during offloading and downstream processing.

The launch comes as regulatory recognition of captured CO2 could give onboard carbon capture a compliance role under the EU ETS.
