AMPP Announces New Research Grant to Study Ammonia as Marine Fuel
The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) has announced a $50,000 research grant to study ammonia as a marine fuel and identify gaps in technical knowledge.
The eight-month project will review research, standards, regulations and safety requirements related to ammonia use on ships, AMPP said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.
It will focus on materials performance, safety and long-term asset integrity.
The selected team will publish a report outlining key knowledge gaps and priorities for future research and technical guidance.
"Emerging technologies often advance faster than the technical guidance needed to support their safe and reliable implementation," Florent Bocher, Director of Research and Program Innovation at AMPP, said.
With ammonia-fuelled engines becoming commercially available and shipowners starting to order vessels, the industry is gradually moving towards the fuel.
Exmar’s recent delivery of its second dual-fuel ammonia vessel is another sign of this shift.
However, challenges remain, particularly around bunkering infrastructure and safety, as ammonia is toxic and requires strict handling.
AMPP is accepting proposals from qualified researchers, universities, research organizations and industry teams until September 25.
