Container shipping firm A.P. Moller-Maersk has taken delivery of another methanol-capable container ship.

The firm took delivery of a 9,000 TEU capacity container ship, Tacoma Mærsk, it said in a LinkedIn post yesterday.

The vessel was delivered at the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings in China.

“With a capacity of 9,000 TEU, it represents one of six mid-sized dual-fuel vessels to join our fleet,” it said.

Equipped with a dual-fuel engine, the vessel is capable of running on methanol and conventional marine fuels.

Maersk was an early adopter of methanol as a marine fuel but has more recently expanded its alternative-fuels strategy with multiple orders for LNG-fuelled container ships.

The latest addition brings Maersk’s methanol-capable fleet to around 23 ships.

The Tacoma Mærsk will soon sail on the company’s MECL service, linking the Middle East and India with the US East Coast.
