Turkish ship management company Semih Sohtorik Management & Agency Inc. (SSMA) has been issued its Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP) certification by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK).
SSMA is the second company to receive the environmental certification by the Japanese classification society, following Japan's Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) as reported by Ship & Bunker last month.
SEEMP remains voluntary until 1 January 2013, after which both new and existing ships with a gross tonnage of 400 tons or greater, need to retain a SEEMP onboard for international voyages.
ClassNK says it is offering the voluntary SEEMP certification programme to assist shipowners and managers comply with the new requirements
“By offering new services to help shipowners and operators improve ship efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions, such as SEEMP certification, ClassNK is proactively address environmental concerns in the maritime industry,“ the not-for-profit society said in a company statement.
