Gibraltar will step up its efforts to keep the port as the most competitive port in the Mediterranean, local news reports.

Minister for Tourism and Port Affairs Neil Costa said that he was working towards making Gibraltar the "premier port of call" in the Western Mediterranean.

Costa noted that in terms of bunkering, competitors had taken notice of the strait as a maritime market, which has also been prompting Gibraltar to respond.

Online services for the maritime industry are currently being developed, while ship and yacht registries have increased, he said.

In addition, he said, the city is ready to accommodate the cruise industry, receiving up to 7,000 passengers at any given time.

Passenger and cruise ship calls have also increased since last year.

Costa said earlier this year that a system of reduced port fees introduced late last year would spur bunkering in the area.
