DFDS is making plans with French unions to stop their Le Havre-Portsmouth service, which has been generating "unsatisfactory" revenue, Tradewinds reports.

For 2013 the Le Havre-Portsmouth route was said to have brought in an "unsatisfactory" revenue of DKK 165 million (USD $28.7 million), and that the route does not have a viable future despite a series of initiatives to improve its performance.

The service is expected to close by the end of this year and before new Emissions Control Area (ECA) regulations come into force next year.

There is expected to be about DKK 15 million (USD $2.6 million) in redundancy costs for shore staff in response to the route's closure, according to the report.

This is the second service halt DFDS has considered within the past month, having also stopped one of its services between Germany and Lithuania in late August due to the Russian embargo on imports.

In March, DFDS said they may shut down up to 7 routes that were running at a loss due to ECA rules and bunker costs.
