New Monjasa group company, African Sprinter Shipping ApS, has announced a deal to purchase its first ship.

The 2005-built, double hulled bunker tanker is being acquired from Abu Dhabi's Eships and will change her name from Eships Bainunah to African Sprinter.

The 8,000 deadweight tonne (DWT), vessel is already operated by the Monjasa group under charter, but will become part of African Sprinter Shipping's owned fleet from January 1, 2015.

She will operate in West Africa under a Maltese flag.

"The tanker fits perfectly into our West African operations, where the Monjasa Group sold a similar sized vessel, the Energizer built in 1996, earlier this year," says Monjasa Partner and African Sprinter Shipping co-founder, Anders Østergaard.

"Further, it fits the overall strategy of expanding our business by organic growth and prioritising a young and modern fleet."

It is understood that African Sprinter Shipping will become the Monjasa group's consolidated ship owning entity, though a timetable for this has not been announced.

Monjasa A/S said recently that it expects "very limited commercial effect" from OW Bunker's collapse.
