Iceland-based energy management technology company Marorka has introduced a new tool that can help ship owners and operators improve their vessels' operations to reduce fuel consumption, the company's Malcolm Holloway says in a video explaining the produce.

The product, Maren Express, can be integrated into a ship's existing information technology structure, allowing it to record data from the main engines, fuel systems, bridge and other sources.

The information is stored in an onboard database and transmitted to shore periodically, and ship owners can access it through a web browser from anywhere without using any special software.

The system can create analyses and visualisations for a single ship, a group of ships, or an entire fleet, providing real-time data on key performance indicators like hull performance, optimal trim, and optimal speed.

The information can then be mapped to a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and used to evaluate individual voyages or set priorities for future improvements.

"You can use all of this information then to increase awareness and to improve the flow of business information from ship to shore," Holloway said.

A survey released last month by maritime software company NAPA Group found that many shipowners are not aware of the fuel saving potential of a SEEMP, and that most use data to ensure compliance and maintain "business as usual" rather than improving fuel efficiency.
