Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri S.p.A. (Fincantieri) says an ultra-luxury ship it is building for Carnival Corp.'s Seabourn brand will "significantly" reduce fuel consumption with optimised hydrodynamics.

"The new ship will continue the evolution that began with Seabourn's fleet expansion, adding modern design elements and innovations consistent with Seabourn's reputation for understated elegance," said Seabourn President Richard D. Meadows.

"With its delivery, the most highly rated cruise line in the world will also offer travelers the newest fleet of ships in the luxury segment."

The 210-metre-long ship will accommodate up to 604 guests and will be able to cruise at up to 18.6 knots.

It will also incorporate safety measures that exceed legal requirements, using "the very latest technologies," Fincantieri said.

The shipbuilder also won an order from Viking Ocean last year for two cruise ships featuring diesel-electric propulsion systems and other technologies to reduce fuel use and emissions.
