Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd (MHI-MME) says the first of its "most-advanced low speed marine diesel engines," the UEC35LSE and UEC33LSE, are entering commercial service.

The engines are designed for ships under 30,000 gross tonnes (gt), including bulkers, chemical tankers, cement carriers, and domestic vessels.

The company says offshore tests of the engines have shown they offer more efficient fuel consumption than competitors.

MHI-MME developed the UEC35LSE with Wartsila Corp. (Wartsila), and the first of the type was built by Kobe Diesel Co. Ltd and mounted on Tokai Kisen Co. Ltd.'s cargo passenger ship Tachibana-Maru.

The first UEC33LSE was manufactured by Akasaka Diesels Ltd, and will be mounted on a chemical tanker being built for Yamato Kisen Co. Ltd.

"With the completion of the first UEC35LSE/UEC33LSE engine, MHI-MME will develop more active operation of businesses, enhancing the partnerships with its global licensees," the company said.

MHI-MME said in May that it is focusing on innovative energy-saving solutions.
