Swedish waste heat recovery systems manufacturer Climeon AB (Climeon) says shipbuilder Fincantieri has placed the first order for its Climeon Ocean system to be installed on newbuild cruise ships.

Six such systems will be installed in vessels currently under construction by the yard for undisclosed customers.

"Climeon Ocean is a heat power solution that generates electricity using waste heat from the ship's engines delivering reduced fuel consumption as well as reduced emissions," says Climeon.

"The configuration is optimizing energy efficiency and usage of heat onboard the ships."

Johan Larson, Head of Marine Sales at Climeon, said the order represented a major step into the sector as "Energy and environmental savings are important factors for the future of the Cruise Ship business."

Deliveries of the above Climeon Ocean systems will start in 2017, the company noted.

While Climeon did not provide specific estimates for the expected bunker savings, last month the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) issued a call for proposals to find partners for its waste heat recovery project, which it expected to garner an estimated 8 percent in bunker savings.
